Watchers Delight Weekly: Recommends- Into the Pride (2009)

Into the Pride is a 2009 Animal Planet documentary, featuring big cat trainer and zoologist Dave Salmoni. Salmoni enters a reservation to hopefully train a pack of lions to stop killing guests of the reservation. The safety of both animals and guests is vital to the reservation as they depend on that income to keep the reservation running .Throughout the season we follow Salmoni as he goes through the ups and downs over a 6 month period. He tries to become as accepted as he can with the pack, all while only having a wooden stick and pepper spray as his defense.

Who would I recommend this for? If you love animals, especially big cats or wild animals…this is your next watch.

If you like watching how someone’s psychology changes over a 6 month period as they live in the wild and deal with hardships of an almost impossible task…this is your next watch

If you’re a thrill seeker loving real high risk television….watching a man try to protect himself with only a stick and some pepper spray from man eating lions…well this is your next watch.

As these five, forty-five minute episodes unfold the watcher is brought to a part of life and a world they would otherwise not ever see.

The aura of the setting is paired with the drama added from the plot. The plot being that this specific pack of lions have had their fair share of bad experiences with humans and also have a history of killing humans before they even arrive to this “last chance” reservation. The reservation runs on the profit from tourists who visit to see true wild animals. The issue is, these lions hate people. If Dave cannot acclimate these lions to cohabitate with the humans around, the pride will be put down.

Where to Watch

Available with subscription- YoutubeTV and HULU

Available with additional purchase- AppleTV and Amazon Prime Video

I believe this is a Watchers Delight hidden gem. A show that will never be outdated or misunderstood. The production, to be fair, is not always the highest of standards, but it adds to the raw, organic, unscripted feel that allows viewers to fully suspend their disbelief and immerse themselves into the shoes of the crew or even someone standing with Dave as he stares into the eyes of the pride.
